Founded by James Evans in his sixth-form common room, FirstCar has grown rapidly in its scope while remaining true to its origins. FirstCar was incorporated in 2004, and has continued to develop new print titles to help road safety practitioners deliver engaging and effective interventions for a variety of audiences. Today, FirstCar publishes over 2.5million magazines annually, giving an unrivalled market reach.
Alongside the print titles, FirstCar has expanded into digital publishing, video, and events, always on the look out for innovative ways to connect with drivers and to share best practice among road safety professionals. The company’s dedication, skill and expertise have been recognised by the Periodical Publishers’ Association (PPA), with FirstCar winning Circulation Initiative of the Year at the PPA Independent Publisher Awards in 2013.

Young drivers were the founding focus of the company, and FirstCar continues to reach this audience through The Young Driver’s Guide, FirstCar Theory, and FirstCar Practical, giving unrivalled access to an audience that can be a challenge to engage with. These titles are regularly updated to stay as relevant and informative as possible. Bespoke covers and bound-in inserts are among the ways these magazines can be tailored to the needs of specific local authorities or other road safety stakeholders.
DriveOn targets drivers at the opposite end of their careers, with advice on how to stay mobile safely and support drivers if they make the difficult decision to cut back on their driving or stop completely. FirstBike targets new motorcyclists with road safety advice, while The Ultimate Guide to Cycling encourages new cyclists to get on their bike, get fit, and stay safe.
Launched in 2016, Intelligent Instructor saw FirstCar expand its print portfolio in a different direction, with a magazine aimed at Approved Driving Instructors. This fortnightly publication has become required reading for any ADI looking to keep up with the latest research and trends in the delivery of high-quality driver training.
Online, the FirstCar website is packed with the great advice and engaging video content, and FirstCar has built a fast-expanding email database, with 85% opting in to receive third-party communications.
In 2017, FirstCar took on its most advanced and challenging video project yet, working with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service on a virtual reality film, giving young drivers a vivid and shocking sense of what it’s like to be involved in a serious collision.
The Young Driver Focus conference, in partnership with Road Safety GB, is the highlight of FirstCar’s events calendar, and has become an annual fixture in the diary of many road safety stakeholders. The conference attracts speakers from across the world, from leading academics to members of the emergency services, working on the frontline of road safety delivery. The conference is also the home of the FirstCar Road Safety Awards, recognising excellence in road safety delivery. And from 2018, the conference will also host the FirstCar Awards, rewarding achievement by car manufacturers, ADIs, and driving schools.
This is just a brief overview of FirstCar’s work. The team also takes on bespoke projects for road safety teams, insurance companies, and charitable institutions with an interest in road safety.
